Shoulda Said
Players perform a scene while. A caller (or random audience members) call out “shoulda said” after any line that needs improvement.
There are various ways to play this game. Some players call “Shoulda said” almost randomly. (Audiences often do the same.) A better approach is to use it on lines that could be improved, usually because they are indecisive or emotionally neutral.
PAUL: So, how was the interview?
AMY: Fine, fine. They said they’ll let me know by next Thursday.
CALLER: Shoulda said!
AMY: I GOT THE JOB!!!
Paul and Amy high-five.
A caller will often need to take a couple of goes to push the player into a different frame of mind.
Players should take the “shoulda said” as an opportunity to make a stronger emotional choice. Very verbal players will instead give quick, panicky responses, offering minor variations on a dull statement.
PAUL: How was your afternoon?
BEN: Meh. My sister’s dog ran away.
CALLER: Shoulda said!
BEN: Meh. My sister’s cat ran away.
CALLER: Shoulda said!
BEN: Meh. My sister’s hamster ran away.
A better choice would have changed the reaction rather than just changing the words. This would automatically lead to a stronger choice.
BEN: Terrible! My sister ran away!
A Non-Variation
If your ego is too delicate to deal with the criticism implied with by the words “shoulda said,” you can instead call “Different Choice.” The resulting game is identical.
